Hefazat rally was designed to oust govt

 The Dhaka Siege programme of the Hefajat-e Islam Bangladesh (HIB) on May 5, was designed to oust the Awami League-led alliance government.
Junaid Babunagari, Secretary General of Hefajat-e Islam disclosed this in his three and a half hour long confessional statement before the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Dhaka on Tuesday, court sources said. Babunagri also revealed that The BNP-led 18-party opposition combine financed the programme and Dhaka city unit Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) convenor Sadek Hossain Khoka coordinated the whole programme and handed over the money to Hefajat leaders, sources said.
Babunagari blamed activists of Jamaat-Shibir, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Juba Dal for violence in downtown Dhaka on the day when property worth crores of taka were vandalised and burnt down.
Babunagari, also gave confessional statement under section 164 regarding the killing of on -duty sub-inspector Mohammad Shajahan, who was brutally murdered by some unruly activists of Hefazat near the car parking of Alico Building on May 5 programme.
He said that unruly activists smashed the head of Shajahan by brick and iron rods and indiscriminately stabbed him untill he collapsed on the ground, court sources said however Babunagari could not mention the name of SI Shajahan killers.
A team of Detective Branch Police arrested Babunagari near the Dhakeshwari Temple on May 6, hours after thousands of Hefajat activists resorted to violence in downtown Dhaka during and after the May 5 rally, causing widespread damage.
Sub-inspector Sheikh Mafizur Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case produced Babunagari before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Harun Ur Rashid at around 2:00pm on Tuesday after the completion of 13 day police remand in two phases prayed to record his confessional statement under Section 164.
After recording his statement, Metropolitan Magistrate Harun Ur Rashid sent Babunagari to jail.
Some 30,000 Qawmi madrasa-based Islamist group Hefajat-e Islam Bangladesh Hefazat men thronged at Shapla Chattar at Motijheel to make the rally a grand success on May 5.
Earlier in the day, thousands of Hefajat supporters besieged Dhaka taking position at the all entry points including Babu Bazar, Demra, Jatrabari, Kanchpur, Shanirakhra, Mirpur, Amin Bazar, Tongi, Gazipur, Abdullahpur, Arichaghat, Sadarghat of the capital Dhaka since morning.
Hefajat-e-Islam blockaded Dhaka to meet its 13-point demands.
