The Chittagong-based Islamist organisation Hefazat-e Islam Bangladesh (HIB) suspended its nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal, which was called on May 12.
In a press conference at Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Muinul Islam Madrasa of Hathajari upazila in Chittagong district on May 7, the Islamist party announced the enforcement of hartal protesting, what they said the law enforcers’ brutality on its activists in Dhaka and across the country on May 5 and the following day. Training Secretary of HIB Mufti Harun Izhar told The Independent this afternoon that the organisation has suspended the hartal, not withdrawn for its own interest.
“We’ve suspended the hartal on humanitarian ground as many of our leaders and activists were killed and scores went missing during the law enforcers’ brutality on us at Motijhil in Dhaka.
We’re now doing field work to see how many of our activists were killed and went missing during the Dhaka siege programme,” he added saying that the organisation high-ups on Thursday decided to suspend the next Sunday’s hartal sensing the hartal could hamper the ongoing field work of the organisation.
Mufti Harun Izhar also said, the hartal might have hampered the ongoing medication and rehabilitation of the injured activists as well as the burial of the deceased activists.
“We’ll take decision on enforcing the suspended hartal on a suitable day in another meeting to be held soon,” he further said.
