Unidentified miscreants looted gold ornaments and cash from a temple in Sutrapur area early on Wednesday, just 23 days after a similar heist at Dhakeshwari Mandir in the city.
Shusil Kumar Datta, secretary of Kadamtola Kali Mandir committee, said the theft took place at the dead of night. Like everyday, priest Manik Chakraborty and Archana Rani came to open the Mandir at around 7.30 am and found all the locks were broken and ornaments that adorn the idol of the Goddess and cash money kept in the donation box had been stolen by the burglars.
Sutarpur police officer-in-charge Nazrul Islam said that miscreants had stolen 4.7 tolas gold, 6 tolas of silver, 10 Sarees and Tk 7,000 in cash from the Mandir at any time after Wednesday midnight.
Priest Manik Chakraborty of the Mandir said they had locked the temple at around 8:00pm on Tuesday and next morning at around 7:30am when they came to reopen it found the six locks were broken.
He said, ‘After several thefts occurred in different temples in the city we took special security care and bought new locks for the Mandir… but despite taking all security measures, the burglars broke into the temple and took away the gold ornaments and cash.’
A case was filed with Sutrapur police station in connection with the burglary.
Earlier, ornaments and cash money were stolen from the city’s three other temples—at Dhakeshwari Mandir on January 9, Joy Kali Temple on December 22 and Bharoteshwari Kali Mandir on December 11.
