Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday asked the Cabinet Secretary to form a high-powered committee headed by a state minister for submitting a report before the cabinet soon after visiting all the garment factories to review infrastructures and other safety measures, taken by the factory-owners. Sheikh Hasina, also president of Awami League (AL), has asked to form the committee following the ‘Savar Tragedy’ that claimed 392 lives and injured over 2,500.
After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary M Mosarraf Hosain Bhuiyan told the reporters that the premier, during the cabinet meeting, asked to form the high-powered committee, in addition to a cabinet committee, for avoiding any incident in the garment sector in future.
“High officials from the ministries of Home, Labour, Disaster Management, Forest and Environment, Defense or Armed Forces division, Commerce, Jute and Textile, Bank and financial institutional affairs division and representatives from Bangladesh Garment Manufactures’ and Exporters’ Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers’ and Exporters’ Association (BKMEA), Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and trade union would be included in the committee,” he said.
“We will issue a gazette notification in this regard soon after getting the name of the head of the committee from the Prime Minister,” he added.
The cabinet secretary informed that the Prime Minister has also asked the ministry of housing and public works to amend the existing building code.
He also said, the works ministry placed a position paper before the cabinet meeting on building code.
