Hijackers in uniform : Cop caught in Savar

A section of members of law enforcing agencies have allegedly been got involved in most of the hijacking incidents in and around the city, especially Savar. In most of the cases, they wear civil dress while some others reportedly use the uniform, pistols and walkie -talkies of the detective police during hijacking. But in the latest incident of hijacking at Savar Friday, police caught a youth along with a policeman, who was wearing the uniform of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, sources exclusively told The Independent.
Local police and officials of the DMP have already admitted that the arrested person is a member of team-3 of the DB of the DMP.
According to Inspector Ashaduzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Savar Model Police Station, police have launched a drive to arrest the other members of the hijacking gang.
He, however, said, “As per statement of the arrested driver along with policeman, the two other miscreants may not be members of police.”
But at this stage of the investigation, actually I cannot confirm anything, he added.
Inspector Wahiduzzaman, Officer-in- Charge of DB of Dhaka District Police, which operates from a rented building near Savar Enam Clinic said, “The arrested policeman is not a member of our district detective team.” About the allegations against detective police of hijacking in the highways he said, “Actually we don’t wear any dress, rather we wear a jacket only during any operation.”
Talking to The Independent, Md Abu Yusouf, Assistant Police Commissioner of the DMP, also said, “Yes, the arrested hijacker is a member of team-3 of the DB of our DMP.”
About the allegation against law enforcing agencies, the AC said, “Since we have got the information, we are taking the matter very seriously.”
By this time, a case under the Speedy Trial Act against the arrested policeman has been recorded at Savar Model Police Station in this connection, he added. Only for few ‘corrupt’ police members, you cannot blame the whole police department and as we have already taken the stern action, you can’t say that we are patronizing the offence of our own members, the DMP official said.
If we took only departmental action against the DB member instead of filing a criminal case, you could blame our higher authority, AC Abu Yusouf.
On early Friday, law enforcers nabbed two alleged hijackers, including a police detective, while they were hijacking  a private car from its driver on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in city’s suburb Savar. Md Hemayet Uddin, 38, a nayek of the DB of the DMP, is the son of Azhar Ali Hawlader hailing from  Tanua village of Ujirpur Upazila of Barisal district.
The other miscreant was identified as Kabir Hossain, 35, son of Kadam Ali from Kalamshwar of Joydevpur Upazila of Gazipur district.
An armed gang of four youths riding a microbus intercepted a private car owned by businessman Aminur Rahman. They put up a barricade on Jorpul Road near Savar in the early hours of Friday and forcefully took away the car from its driver.
The gang also tried to pick up the businessman in the microbus.
As the car driver cried out for help, the locals caught and beat up the Hemayet and Kabir and handed them over to police. Police also seized the microbus used in the carjacking.
Mosi Uddowla Reza, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Savar Model Police Station said, “The two other members of the gang escaped in the private car.”
Earlier on Tuesday, six miscreants claiming themselves as DB policemen hijacked about Tk 6 lakh from trader Tilok Bol at Boliapur area under Savar.
According to Tilok, he was passing the Salehpur Bridge at around 11:PM on Tuesday night after selling fishes at city’s Karwanbazar area.
After creating roadblock, six hijackers who were brandishing pistols and walkie-talkies in their hands, identified themselves as DB police, blind folded them and took them on their micro-bus. Later in the night, the hijackers threw them from running car after hijacking Tk around 6 lakh, he described.
Admitting the incident, sub-inspector Sazzadur Romon of Savar Model than said, “We are trying to recover the hijacked money and to arrest the hijackers.”
