The price of hilsa took its last jump on the capital’s kitchen markets on Saturday, a day before Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bangla New Year 1420.
The price of hilsa weighting around 1 kg-1.5 kg increased by Tk 400-Tk 800 a kg in a day, said fish traders.
A piece of hilsa weighing around 900 grams to 1 kg was selling at Tk 2,000-Tk 2,400 a kg on the day whereas it was selling at Tk 1,800-Tk 2,000 a kg on Friday.
Hilsa weighing 1.2 kg to 1.5 kg was selling at Tk 3,500-Tk 4,000 a piece on the day at Shantinagar kitchen market. The same item was selling at Tk 2,800-Tk 3,200 a piece on Friday.
Bimal Chandra Barman, a hilsa trader at Karwan Bazar, said the demand for hilsa weighting around 1 kg-1.5kg increased excessively in the last two days and so a supply shortage took place in the market.
Due to excessive demand the price of big hilsa made a jump in a night, he said.
Monir Hossain, another hilsa trader at Shantinagar kitchen market, said that he had sold hilsa weighting around 1 kg-1.2 kg at Tk 3,000 and weighting 1.5 kg at Tk 4,000-Tk 4,200 on Sunday but the same item was selling at Tk 2,500-Tk 3,500 respectively on Saturday.
He also said the price of big hilsa increased but that of smaller ones did not increase much.
