Five premier division clubs submitted a letter to the National Sports Council on Thursday to seek the use of the Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium for the proposed rebel Dhaka Hockey League. The five clubs – Mohammedan SCL, Wari Club, Dhaka Wanderers, Bangladesh SC and Ajax SC – decided along with Mariner Youngs Club not to participate in any hockey-related activities under the existing Bangladesh Hockey Federation committee earlier this year and are planning to run their own league in November.
‘We submitted a letter to the NSC secretary [Sibnath Roy] to allot the Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium from November 1 to 20 to hold the Dhaka Hockey League,’ said Mohammedan hockey manager Ariful Haque Prince.
Prince, along with Bangladesh SC general secretary Hazi Mohammad Humayun, Wari Club hockey secretary Nazirul Islam Nazu and Dhaka Wanderers hockey secretary Jasimuddin, submitted the letter to the NSC secretary on Thursday. No Ajax SC officials were present.
‘We believe that the Dhaka Hockey League will play an effective role in hockey development as well as stabilise the financial state of the players,’ Prince said.
Roy confirmed that the NSC had received a letter from the clubs’ officials.
‘The application will be put to the executive meeting as per the official system to determine whether the stadium can be allotted to them,’ he said on Thursday.
‘I will also discuss the matter with the chairman of the NSC [Ahad Ali Sarker, state minister of youth and sports], the secretary of the youth and sports ministry and the officials of the Bangladesh Hockey Federation.’ he added.
