Death Anniversary Observed
Homage to poet Nazrul
The nation remembers National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam for his spirit against injustice and bigotry on the occasion of the legendary poet’s 36th death anniversary yesterday.
Different eminent personalities, politicians, academicians, cultural personalities, family members of the poet, poetry lovers and people in general paid homage to the rebel poet, placing wreaths at his grave on the Dhaka University (DU) premises.
“Nazrul’s practices should be expanded among all sections of people for removing social injustice and inequality,” said his grand daughter Khilkhil Kazir while talking to journalists.
Various cultural, social and political organisations and academic institutions organised elaborate programmes, including fateha, discussions and cultural programmes, to mark the day.
Dhaka University (DU) students, teachers and employees, led by its Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, marched from Aparajeyo Bangla to Nazrul’s grave around 7:45am and placed wreath there.
DU authorities also held a memorial meeting there on the occasion.
A delegate of the ruling Awami League, led by party presidium member Satish Chandra Roy, placed wreath at the poet’s grave.
The main opposition BNP Standing Committee Member MK Anwar also placed wreath at the grave.
Besides, Bangla Academy organised a memorial speech and cultural function at its seminar room marking the day.
Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote organised a discussion meeting at its Gulshan office on the occasion.
Information and Cultural Affairs Ministry, Nazrul Institute and Antorjatik Nazrul Chetona Kendra also placed wreaths at the poet’s grave.
Jatiya Kabi Mrittu Barshiki Udjapan Committee organised discussions and cultural programme at Tewta village in Shivalaya upazila of Manikganj, reports our correspondent.
Speakers there demanded establishing a Nazrul research institute in Tewta village or establishing the area as a tourist spot to protect the memories of the poet.
