Qatar became the first host nation to lose a World Cup opening with Ecuador’s 2-0 win.
Valencia scored from the penalty spot in the 16th minute and doubled Ecuador’s advantage in the 32nd minute.
VAR rejected a goal in the third minute that would have given Valencia a first-half hat trick.
