A husband stabbed his wife following a row over money at the city’s Mohammadpur on Saturday night, police and family members said.
The victim Amena Khatun, 40, wife of Arshed Ali, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) yesterday morning with stab injuries to her head, hands, back and chest.
Police arrested Arshed from his house immediately after the incident.
The couple’s 15-year-old son Sumon, who works in a garment factory, told reporters that his father could not afford to bear their family expenses. Rather, he often demanded money from Sumon.
“If I failed to give him money, he would torture my mother,” he said.
On Saturday, the couple was locked in an altercation over money at about 9:30pm. At one stage, Arshed beat Amena with a spice grinding stone and then, stabbed her with a knife locking the door of their bedroom from inside, Sumon said.
The neighbours took Amena to DMCH at about 1:30am.
Amena’s elder brother Abdul Goni filed an attempt-to-murder case with Mohammadpur Police Station yesterday morning, said Aminul Islam, sub-inspector of the police station.
Ayub Ali, another brother of the victim, said they came to know that Arshad has two other wives and children in Natore. Arshed married Amena six years back and since then he had been torturing her for money, he added.
