How to Stay Happily Married

Most people dream of finding someone to love and marry. With divorce rates soaring, marriage can be a scary word. But if you go into your marriage with your eyes open and a willingness to make it work, you can stay happily married. Follow these tips to make your marriage work.
Step 1: Communicate with your spouse. Talk about everyday things and important things. Say sorry and be forgiving. You have to be a friend to get a friend. Friends really listen to each other. They don’t just wait for their turn to speak.
Step 2: Agree to compromise with your spouse when it comes to important issues. You can’t always have your own way. Remember you’re friends and friends take turns. Be flexible and give a little.
Step 3: Respect each other. Be kind and courteous. You don’t have to like everything your spouse does but treat the person with respect especially in front of other people.
Step 4: Have fun. Continue to date and do things together. Remember why you fell in love. Don’t let the drudgery of everyday life ruin the relationship you built together. You don’t have to have everything in common to be happy. Find the things you do have in common and enjoy them together.
Step 5: Let it go. Fight but get over it. It’s okay to disagree. In fact, it’s healthy to disagree. It’s when you attack each other that it’s not healthy for your marriage. Fight constructively and get everything out in the open. Don’t leave things pent up inside where they will grow into large problems.
Step 6: Be honest even when you’re in trouble. Your spouse should be your best friend. Be trustworthy yourself. Make sure your spouse can count on you. It’s hard to be happily married if you lie to each other.
Step 7: Keep your sense of humor. Find the humor in everyday situations instead of taking life too seriously. Sometimes life throws you hard times but if you can see the humor in the everyday, you’ll be better equipped to handle the stress.
