Law enforcers are yet to make any headway in the Gopibagh six murder case, but family members and RAB suspect Harkat-ul Jihad (Huji) militants involvement in the killing. Unidentified assailants murdered Lutfur Rahman, a controversial Pir, along with his son and four disciples in a house at Gopibagh in the capital on Saturday. However, three separate teams of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and two units from Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were looking for clues to the killing.
Talking to The Independent on Monday night, Lutfur’s younger son Abdullah al-Faruq said,‘‘ My father was detained in 2007 along with his ten disciples, and kept in the same jail with Huji leader Mufti Hannan.”
Quoting his assassinated father, Abdullah, a officer of Asia Bank said,‘‘ Mufti Hannan admitted during a conversation with his father that he had carried out an attack in 2005 at Bibir Bagicha area in the capital.”
According to Colonel Ziaul Ahshan, Additional Director General( Operation) of Rapid Action Battalion, some banned militant outfits like Hizb-ut Tahrir and Harkat-ul Jihad might be involved in the killing. The RAB second-in-command suspected that the militant groups might have hired extremists from the south-western region of the country to carry out the killings.
Lt Colonel Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, Director of RAB Intelligence Wing said,‘‘ We are confident of arresting the killers soon.” About the reason behind the murder, he said,‘‘ We are keeping various aspects in mind while investigating, but our main focus is on religious fanaticisms, which might have influenced the killing.”
‘‘We are sure about one thing that the murder was pre-planned,” the RAB Intelligence chief said adding: ‘‘Besides DB police, we are investigating the incident,’’ Lt Col Azad added.
Sources in DB hinted that they are about to find the reason behind the killing. On condition of anonymity, a senior detective official said that they would soon get to know the motive behind the murder. But for the sake of proper investigation, he refused to elaborate.
According the sources, DB have already detained some people in connection with the murder.
Md Monirul Islam, Deputy Police Commissioner (DB) of DMP said,‘‘ The killers were professionals and they might have visited the house several times before the incident.”
They knew about everything of the flat and chose the Magrib prayer time for killing the six people, he added. Meanwhile, investigators on Monday visited the spot and interrogated some people, including the family members of slain Lutfur.
