With the onset of the Ramzan on Thursday, Iftar shops mushroomed in every corner of the capital displaying various traditional Iftar items. Though prices of Iftar items have gone up this year, sellers say they have no choice but to raise prices due to high cost of ingredients. Yet, the high prices didn’t seem to deter the food lovers as the iftar shops are found full of customers. However, iftar market was most bustling in Chawkbazar in the old part of the capital.
Apart from traditional Beguni, Piazu, Chhola, Zilapi, Halim and others, the most sought-after item of the iftar market in Chawkbazar area. “Business is good on the first day of Ramzan, but the customers are somewhat disappointed with the price hike,” said a shop owner at Chawkbazar.
Abdul Wahab, another vendor at the Elephant Road said the prices of different items have risen for the high prices of soyabean oil, flour, green chilli, onion and other related spices.
However many customers also expressed concern about adulterated Iftar items.
