The prices of fish remained high from the beginning of Ramadan, the fasting month of the Muslims, and the prices of most of the variety of the item witnessed a new rise on
the capital’s kitchen markets over the week ending Friday.
The prices of some of the commodities including green chilli, garlic and egg, however, decreased in the market over the week.
Traders said that the wholesale prices of all variety of fish increased at Swarighat, the biggest wholesale fish market of the capital.
Narayan Chandra Barman, a trader of Shantinagar kitchen market, told New Age that the prices of fish increased on the wholesale market from Tk 50 to Tk 100 a kg as the demand had increased during Ramadan.
He said that the price of hilsa increased the most as catching of the fish from rivers had dropped a bit than the last year.
Rohita was selling at Tk 250–Tk 350 a kg, katla at Tk 250–Tk 300 a kg, pangas at Tk 180–Tk 300 a kg and tilapia at Tk 180–Tk 210 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
The price of hilsa weighing around 1 kg to 1.2 was selling at Tk 1,500-Tk to Tk 1,600 a kg.
A hilsa weighing about 600 grams to 700 grams was selling at Tk 400 to Tk 550 a piece at Karwan Bazar on Friday.
Green chilli price decreased by Tk 40 a kilogram and was selling at Tk 80–Tk 100 a kg on the day.
The price of aubergine decreased by Tk 40 a kg and was selling at Tk 40–Tk 60 a kg on the city’s retail markets.
The prices of papaya, okra, and bitter gourd remained unchanged and were selling at Tk 40–Tk 60 a kg, Tk 25 a kg, Tk 30 a kg and Tk 40–Tk 50 a kg respectively on Friday.
Tomato price remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 100 a kg.
Beef was selling at Tk 290–Tk 300 a kg and broiler at Tk 160 a kg. Mutton was selling at Tk 425–Tk 450 a kg.
The local ginger was retailing at Tk 180 a kg, while the imported item was selling at Tk 90 a kg.
The price of edible oil remained stable on the market.
Unpacked soya bean was retailing at Tk 120 a kg and super palm oil at Tk 80 a kg over the week ending Friday.
The price of bottled soya bean oil (five litres) was selling at Tk 635–Tk 655 on Friday.
Red lentil, imported from Turkey and Canada, was selling at Tk 75–Tk 85 a kg over the week.
The price of fine variety of red lentil called ‘kangaroo’ was selling at Tk 130 a kg on Friday while the local variety of red lentil was selling at Tk 115 a kg.
Onion price remained high at Tk 50 a kg, while the imported onion was retailing at Tk 45 a kg on Friday.
The imported garlic price remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 70 a kg while the local garlic was retailing at Tk 90 a kg on the day.
The price of potato remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 18 a kg on the day.
The price of egg decreased by Tk 2 a hali (four pieces) and was selling at Tk 30 a hali on Friday.
Sugar price remained unchanged and the commodity was selling at Tk 46–Tk 48 a kg on Friday.
Chickpea price decreased by Tk 5 a kg and the commodity was selling at Tk 60–Tk 65 a kg.
Dates were retailing at the ranges between Tk 140 and Tk 550 a kg.
The prices of gur and puffed and flaked rice remained unchanged.
Gur was selling at between Tk 100 and Tk 150 kg, puffed rice at between Tk 60 and Tk 75 a kg and flaked rice at between Tk 60 and Tk 80 a kg.
Fine varieties of miniket and najirshail rice were selling at between Tk 42 and Tk 52 a kg, medium varieties at between Tk 36 and Tk 48 a kg and coarse varieties at between Tk 32 and Tk 34 a kg.
