Bangladesh finished seventh in the 8th Asia Cup hockey tournament after a 11-1 defeat against India in the classification match at Wisma Belia Stadium of Kuantan, Malaysia on Thursday.
India, which surprisingly failed to make it to the last four, started the game with an aggressive note and swooped on the Bangladesh team from the outset of the match.
After a morale shattering 2-2 draw with China on May 12, Indian players never showed flagging against Bangladesh, which earlier lost its all Pool A matches against Japan (0-5), Malaysia (1-7) and South Korea (0-9).
Bangladesh played relatively better in the first half and conceded three goals, but after the change of ends Bangladesh players lost their energy and allowed the Indians to score seven goals more, though they found their only goal, and the second in the tournament, in the second half.
India started its goal feast when Sandeep Singh converted a penalty corner after 10 minutes. He scored the second goal just three minutes later, also from a short corner. Hari Prasad added the third just on the stroke of half time.
Arjun Halappa increased the margin 4-0 on 39 minutes and Bakaliga Raghunath added yet another four minutes later. Sunil scored on 48 and 57 minutes to extend the Indian advantage 7-0.
Bangladesh also tried to go on attacks on several occasions but, most of the times, their forwards were in no mood to go through the Indian citadel. They received balls from the midfield but were unable to covert the chances into precious goals.
However, Bangladesh scored a goal through Iqbal Nader Prince, who successfully connected a cross from Zahidul Islam Rajon on 59 minutes, bringing off the first field goal for Bangladesh in the tournament (7-1).
But the goal could not reduce the Indians’ thirst for goal as the winners scored four goals more in the remainder to gain a 11-1 victory.
The 8th Asia Cup hockey tournament began on May 9 in Kuantan, a resort town on the Malaysian east coast and the capital city of the state of Pahang, nearly 300 kilometres from the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.
The tournament initially was to be held in Dubai, but United Arab Emirates organizers withdrew as hosts due to economic downturn and Kuantan agreed to host the top most Asian event at a short notice.
