India won the two-Test series 2-0 wshen the visitors defeated Bangladesh by 10 wickets in the second Test of the Idea Cup on the fourth day at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday.
Earlier, India beat Bangladesh by 113 runs in the first Test at the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong, the port city of the country on January 21.
Winning the toss Bangladesh chose to bat first and scored a modest 233 in the first innings on the first day of the game.
In reply, India declared their first innings making 544 for the loss of eight wickets on the third day of the play and set a target to cross 310 to avoid innings defeat.
Bangladesh made 228 for the loss of three wickets at the close of the third day (Wednesday).
Shahadat Hossain (2) and Mohammad Ashraful (2) resumed their second innings and they contributed 68 runs in the fourth wicket stand before Shahadat Hossain was caught at the long on by substitute Amit Mishra off Zaheer Khan when the team’s total was 290 for the loss of four wickets.
Shahadat Hossain was the day’s most successful batsman with a patient 40 off 74 balls. He struck four fours and a six in his decent 100-minute innings.
After dismissal of Shahadat, Mohammad Ashraful, his partner could stay at the crease for a few minutes before he was caught behind by MS Dhoni off Pragyan Ojha scoring 25 when the scoreboard was showing 291 for the loss of five wickets.
Then, medium pacer Zaheer Khan totally dominated over the hosts’ batsmen and ravaged the middle order batsmen and the tail-enders.
Zaheer Khan bowled extremely well and posted his career-best bowling figure in Tests with an outstanding spell as 20.3-2-87-7.
Zaheer Khan was adjudged the Man of the Match with (3+7)=10 wickets and was also adjudged Man of the Series with (5+10)=15 wickets.
Bangladesh’s score was 312 for the loss of nine at the lunch and after lunch the hosts got for a few minutes more and were bundled out at the same score.
Skipper Shakib Al Hasan (7), Rokibul Hasan (5), Mahmud Ullah Riyad (0), Shafiul Islam(0), Rubel Hossain (O), were all the victims of destroyer Zaheer Khan.
Helpless Mushfiqur Rahim remained undefeated with 10 runs.
Needing just two runs to win, Virendar Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir came at the crease but they did not use their willow because the two runs came from by-runs (Mr Extra) from the second delivery of Shakib Al Hasan and India earned emphatic 10-wicket victory.
The Tigers’ consolation of the second Test was a dazzling 151 by Tamim Iqbal and an undefeated but unfortunate 96 by Mahmud Ullah Riyad.
