At least two members of Border Guard Bangladesh were injured as a group of Indian smugglers attacked them on early Sunday in Hatkhola border under Panchbibi upazila of Jaipurhat, BGB officials said. An Indian cattle smuggler, Md Mozibar Rahman Bappa, 30, of Laskar village under Hili thana in Dakkhin Dinajpur district of India, died as the border guard members opened fire to disperse the smugglers.
The injured border guards, Md Mosaraf Hossain, 34, and Motiar Rahman, 35, of Jaipurhat-3 Battalion, were admitted to
battalion headquarters hospital.
Witnesses said that a group of Indian smugglers came 200 metres in side Bangladesh territory at Haatkhola of Panchibiab upazila at about 4:15am on Sunday.
The Indian smugglers attack the border guards with sharp weapons leaving the two border guards injured, as the BGB men challenged them. In retaliation, the border guards fired at three rounds of bullet to disperse the Indian smugglers leaving one of them injured.
The Indian smugglers went away inside the India territory where the injured succumbed to his injuries, border guard source said.
The Border Guard of Bangladesh battalion commander in Jaipurhat, Lt Colonel Sabbir Khasru Ali, said that a flag meeting between the Border Guard of Bangladesh and the Indian Border Security Force was held at Hatkhola border at around 12:30pm Sunday.
At the flag meeting the BSF protested against the firing by the the border guards, while the border guard officials said that the BGB men had opened fire for their safety after being attacked by the Indian smugglers.
Lt Colonel Sabbir Khasru Ali and BSF 75 Balurghat Battalion commander R Mathu Kisman led the respective teams at flag meeting.
