The point-to-point inflation in June has soared further touching 8.05 per cent, according to the base year 2005-06. In May, the inflation rate was 7.98 per cent.
However, the average annual inflation rate in FY13 came down to 6.78 per cent,
which was 8.69 per cent in FY12. Bangladesh Bureau of Statistic (BBS) director general Golam Mostafa Kamal said that despite the rise in inflation in June, the average annual inflation nosedived compared to the last fiscal year. He was addressing the Consumer Price Index (CPI) at the BBS auditorium on Sunday.
The general point-to-point inflation in June soared further as it reached 8.05 per cent from 7.98 per cent registered in May this year.
According to the 2005-06 base year, the point-to-point inflation in June this year rose to 8.05 per cent point from 7.98 per cent in May.
“Successful market control strategy by the government helped contain the annual average inflation rate below seven per cent,” said Golam Mostafa. He added that the stable price of rice, along with some food items,
also helped control the annual average inflation.
Golam Mostafa said despite the fall in average annual inflation, the point-to-point inflation rate had witnessed an upward trend in June compared to May, due to price hike in some food and non-food items, apart from the upcoming month of Ramadan.
As per the base year 2005-06, food inflation rose by 0.13 per cent in June, while the non-food inflation dropped by 0.01 per cent, compared to May.
The report said food inflation in June rose to 8.26 per cent, compared to 8.13 per cent in May. On the other hand, the non-food inflation rate declined to 7.75 per cent in June, from 7.76 per cent in May.
In urban areas, the general point-to-point inflation rate was 9.08 per cent, which was 7.53 per cent in the rural areas. The general inflation in urban areas in May was 9.04 per cent, compared to 7.42 per cent in the rural areas.
Food inflation went up in rural areas in June, compared to the previous month and it was 7.58 per cent against 7.40 per cent in May. Non-food inflation in rural areas declined as it was 7.43 per cent in June, compared to 7.47 per cent in May.
In urban areas, food inflation rose in June as it stood at 9.94 per cent while it was 9.89 per cent in May.
Non-food inflation in urban areas also witnessed an upward trend in June as it stood at 8.21 per cent, compared to 8.17 per cent in May.
The national wage index rate also witnessed a 10.90 per cent growth in this June with Tk. 7,709.24, which was Tk. 7,667.68 in May.
