Bangladesh celebrated International Women’s Day on Tuesday as elsewhere in the world with calls for an end to discrimination and violence against women, and creating an inclusive, sustainable and gender-equal world.
Different government and non-government institutions, political and rights organisations observed the day across the country through different programmes, including processions, rallies and discussions.
The theme of International Woman’s Day 2022 is ‘Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow’.
Five women were honoured with ‘Joyeeta Award’ this year at an event arranged by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs on Tuesday evening.
Education minister Dipu Moni chaired the event at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.
This year’s Joyeeta awardees are Sanzida Akter Shimu from Shirajganj upazila in Rajshahi division for scripting success in the economic sector, Hossain Ara Arzu, associate professor at Rajshahi University for her contribution to the education sector, Khoshnahar Begum from Chattogram division as a successful mother, Jesmin Akter from Barishal division for fighting against oppression, and Rokeya Begum from Rangpur division for her contribution to social development.
Amrai Pari Paribarik Nirjaton Protirodh Jote, to mark the day, organised a virtual programme at midnight past Monday and launched online campaign #EnlightenagainstDarkness.
The Social Resistance Committee, a platform of 66 women rights, human rights and development organisations, organised a rally and a cultural programme on the premises of the Central Shaheed Minar.
The programme was presided over by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad president Fauzia Moslem. A procession followed the rally.
Around five hundred activists of the platform took part in the programme at the Central Shaheed Minar at around 3:00pm, reported New Age Dhaka University correspondent.
Samajtantrik Mahila Forum held a rally in front of the National Press Club in the morning.
Nari Oikya Parishad held a discussion meeting at the National Press Club to mark the day where president of the organisation Lutfunnesa Khan chaired.
Former Bangladesh Bank governor Atiur Rahman, assistant attorney general Tahmina
Akter, acting general secretary of the organisation Sheuli Shikder, central leaders Tahsina Reza and Shahana Ferdausi Luky spoke at the discussion meeting.
The day was observed in all other districts, reports received from the districts said.
Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and all other private radio and television channels aired special programmes, while newspapers published supplements highlighting the significance of the day.
