The performance in the Bangladesh Premier League seemed to have made a telling effect for some players in the Indian Premier League auction that was held in Chennai on Saturday.
Only a handful of BPL players were involved in the auction and given the manner it all happened only suggested that the IPL teams clearly followed their performance in an identical Bangladesh condition.
West Indies pace bowler Fidel Edwards was rewarded with a place in Rajasthan Royals for $210,000 after his eight wickets in five matches propelled Rangpur Riders to the third place halfway through the league.
The biggest gainer at the IPL auction among the BPL players, however, is Sylhet Royals’ Dirk Nannes, who was bought by Chennai Super Kings for $600,000. Dutch international Nannes made his name playing for Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, but had initially gone unsold at BPL auction in December.
Royals later included him at his base price of $75,000 and the player made a decent contribution in their impressive run in the league. He took seven wickets in five matches for Royals, the frontrunner in the BPL with six wins from seven matches.
Poor BPL performance cost Ravi Bopara heavily as he went unsold twice in the auction despite having a base price of $100,000. Playing for Chittagong Kings, Bopara made just 101 runs in seven matches at 16.83, which surely went against him.
Bopara’s Kings team-mate Jacob Oram also had gone unsold initially but found a bidder in Mumbai Indians after he was put on auction second time in the afternoon. Mumbai picked Oram, who made just 45 runs for Kings in five matches, at his base price $50,000.
Rangpur Riders’ Kevin O’Brien was also unable to attract any bidder after he made just 36 runs in five matches in the BPL.
No Bangladeshi players were put up for IPL auction this season as Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors have already retained Sakib al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal respectively.
