Mohammedan Sporting Club’s Shamsur Rahman is not eyeing too far despite making a match-winning unbeaten century against arch-rivals Abahani in the Dhaka Premier League at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Sunday. Shamsur made 105 from 115 balls and remained at the crease till the end to script a memorable win for the MSC and help his side cross one of the biggest hurdles.
‘Definitely it is one of best the innings of my career,’ Shamsur told reporters.
‘But I am not looking very far ahead as far as the national team is concerned. There are many matches of the national side in the next 2-3 months and I am sure I will get my opportunity,’ said Shamsur.
Shamsur is not new in the Tigers dressing room as he had been with the national team several times. He toured England in 2010 for Test matches and the T20 World Cup, but unfortunately he never made it to the playing X1 and eventually lost his place after that tour, He had to wait for two years to make a comeback with the Sri Lanka tour.
But his form had been so brilliant in the Bangladesh Premier League, where he became the emerging player of the competition scoring 421 runs with six fifties, that prompted the national selectors to called him up to replace HSC exam candidate Anamul Haque for the T20 leg of the Sri Lankan tour in Mrach.
With the forthcoming home series against New Zealand scheduled to begin from next month, the century in the high-voltage match is surely going to strengthen his claim for a place in the national team.
‘I think I am extremely fit because of the fitness training camp for the national members,’ said Shamsur.
‘The hard work is surely paying off. But along with that I also worked on my batting as I failed to translate the fifties into big scores,’ he added.
‘It was extremely pleasing to score so much runs in the biggest match of the competition,’ said the man from Comilla.
In the first innings the ball was coming a bit slowly on to the bat but the wicket became flat in the second innings,’ said Shamsur.
‘I believed that if I could bat till the end we would come out victorious,’ he added, while explaining his plan of chasing such a mammoth 283 runs for victory.
