Ghazal singer Jagjit Singh is said to be in a ‘critical’ condition after suffering a brain haemorrhage.
Singh was admitted to Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital on Friday just hours before he was due to perform on stage with Ghulam Ali.
The hospital has since released a statement saying: “Mr. Jagjit Singh’s condition remains critical. We have to respect the patient’s privacy and therefore cannot comment further.”
However, hospital sources told NDTV that Singh underwent an emergency neurosurgery.
Members of the film fraternity have posted messages hoping for Singh’s speedy recovery.
Writing on his blog, Amitabh Bachchan said: “A man with a silken voice, effortless and so endearing in all the most important and popular renditions of his songs.
“May he recover fast. He has had a traumatic life after the death of his only son at a very young age in a rash driving accident.”
Lata Mangeshkar, who recorded an album with the singer, wrote: “I just got to know that our favourite ghazal singer Jagjit Singh had suffered a brain haemorrhage and he’s in the hospital. I pray to God for his speedy recovery.”
Sonu Nigam tweeted: “We’ll all pray for Jagjitji. We want his royal voice to grace our planet for many more years. God bless him and save him.”
The 70-year-old singer has a history of heart ailments, and also suffers from hypertension.
