The Bangladesh national women’s cricket team targeted Pakistan as they left for India on Tuesday to take part in the ICC World Twenty20. Skipper Jahanara Alam said they are confident of putting up an impressive show in the tournament despite being pitted against some of the leading sides. Bangladesh are currently ranked ninth in ICC Twenty20 rankings and they are expected to face some hard competition in the group phase compromising with India, Pakistan, West Indies and England.
Bangladesh came close to a victory against Pakistan on few occasions and they are now focused as well as encouraged to cross the last hurdle against their Asian counterparts in the global event as the women in red and green are well aware of opponent’s strength and weakness.
‘We are targeting Pakistan in the tournament,’ Jahanara told reporters at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport prior to their departure.
‘We came close against them on few occasions,’ said Jahanara.
‘Now we don’t want to slip as will try to reduce our mistakes. If we can do that we are confident we can be victorious.’
Jahanara said though they could not get the chance to play as many matches as they would have liked still they are confident of execute their skills as they went through some intensive training.
Though BCB tried their best to arrange matches against other countries, it could not happen as they were engaged elsewhere and it also had the scarcity of grounds, which were engaged to host the ICC Under-19 cricket tournament recently.
‘It’s true we could not play a lot of matches as part of our preparation’, said Jahanara.
‘Still we had some good training sessions to prepare us and now we will try to execute our skills that had developed during the course of time.’
Bangladesh begin their campaign against India on March 15 and will face England at Bangalore on March17.
Their next game will be against West Indies in Chennai on March 20 before playing their last group match against Pakistan at New Delhi on March 24.
