The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Tuesday deferred for 24 hours the 48-hour general strike, the party had called for August 12-13, to allow the Eid holidaymakers to return their workplaces.
The party’s acting secretary general Rafiqul Islam Khan in a statement said that the party would now enforce the strike in August 13-14.The Jamaat on August 1 called a 48-hour nationwide general strike for August 12 and 13 protesting against a High Court verdict that declared its registration as a political party illegal.
The High Court on August 1 declared illegal the Election Commission’s decision to register the Jamaat as a political party.
Rafiqul also condemned the re-arrest of Jamaat leaders from jail gate after they were released on bail.
‘The government became more desperate out of vengeance and re-arresting Jamaat leaders
who had been released on bail granted by the High Court.’
