Director Kamar Ahmad Simon’s documentary film featuring plight of the apparel workers of the country was screened on the famous Japanese television channel NHK on Monday. The documentary titled Ekti Sutar Jobanbondi narrates inside-out story of the apparel industry of the country through conversations of four individuals directly involved with it. The documentary was made with the grant given by The Asian Pitch, an organisation of four leading television channels from Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Singapore. ‘Korean channel KBS, Singapore’s MediaCorp and Taiwan’s Taipei Television will also air the documentary,’ Kamar Ahmad Simon told New Age. ‘The documentary is my tribute to the industry, which has now become the 2nd largest industry of its kind after China. ‘But, I observe that people have different viewpoints about the apparel industry, what I’ve presented in the documentary.’ Produced by Sara Afreen, Ekti Sutar Jobanbondi is expected to be released in Bangladesh within a few months, Kamar said.
Kamar Ahmad Simon’s debut project was Shuntey Ki Pao, a documentary film depicting the struggle of the coastal area people.
The film received several international recognitions including Grand Prix for best film in 35th Cinema Du Reel in France, Jury Prize at Film South Asia 2013, best documentary in 13th Mumbai International Film Festival. Besides, the film was the curtain raiser of 55th edition of Dok Leipzig in 2012, the oldest documentary festival of the world.
