At least 10 people were injured, and one of them was bullet hit, in a clash held between the activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and police on the Jagannath University (JnU) campus on Thursday. Eyewitness said, hundreds of activists of JnU JCD unit brought out a procession on the campus at around 11.30 am protesting the PM speech where she said that Tareq Zia lead the 21 August grenade attack.
After completing the parade, when the JCD activists tried to leave the campus through the main gate, police interrupted them and told them to use the second gate for exit.
But, as the JCD activists refused, police charged batons on them. The angry JCD activists vandalized 15 vehicles parked in front of the campus gate and blasted five cocktails in front of the main gate of the campus.
Later, police fired a dozen of rubber bullets and tear gas to bring the situation under control, leaving 10 people injured. The injured were identified as Kazim Khondokar (Economics first batch), Jakir Hossain Khan Uzzal (Geography), Siraj, Nazir, Shamim, Sujon, Jafor, Shanto and Habib.
The injured were taken to different private clinics of the area while bullet hit Siraj was taken to Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital (SSMCH) in critical condition.
According to latest information, Siraj was taken to the operation theater of SSMCH.
When contacted, president of JnU JCD unit Faisal Ahmed Sajal told the Independent that police opened fire on them when they were going back after observing a peaceful protest rally that left 10 of their activists injured. We strongly protest the police attack, he added.
However, Officer-in-Charge of Kotowali police station Abu Bakkar Siddique refused any police attack over the JCD activists. He told the The Independent that they only fired the tear gas and rubber bullets to bring the on-going situation under control and stop them from attacking passenger buses.
We have arrested a JCD activist Jutfar Rahman from the spot on charge of damaging public property and actions will be taken against them after proper investigation, he added.
