Jesmin wins first national gold
In the absence of injured defending champion Sumita Rani, Jesmin Akther of Bangladesh Army won her first women’s 100m hurdles gold at the National Athletic Championships at the Army Stadium in Banani yesterday. Jesmin, who had won gold at the junior national championship in 2007 and in 2009, had never beaten Sumita, but this time her rival’s absence paved her way to win gold at the national level.
‘It could have been better had Sumita taken part in the meet and there had been competitiveness in the event,’ said Jesmin, who won bronze at the 2010 South Asian Games, again finishing behind Sumita.
Jesmin’s Bangladesh Army team also shone on the second day, bagging four gold medals in 11 events.
With the haul of four gold medals, Bangladesh Army raised their gold tally to six, but Bangladesh Navy top the table with seven gold medals after picking up three yesterday.
BJMC also have six gold medals, while BKSP have won four in two days.
