Calling upon the opposition to return to the parliamentary, Awami League presidium member Kazi Zafarullah on Friday said the tenure of the 12th parliament session period had been extended for the opposition so that they can place their proposals before it. “The tenure of the current parliament session has been extended only for the opposition so that it can place its proposals if any,” Kazi Zafarullah said while addressing a prepatory meeting of selling party nomination forms among the party candidates, at the Bangabandhu Avenue in the city.
Callihng upon the main opposition BNP to participate in the next general election to be held by January 24, Awami League leader said, “We brought an election atmosphere in the country and the polls will be held in due time as per the constitutional provisions. So the opposition should join the polls, instead of pushing the country on to the verge of collapse.”
About holding a dialogue, the AL presidium member said the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s offier to the opposition leader Khaleda Zia still stands. If the opposition wants, dialogue can be held any time, he added.
He said that the next general election is needed to be free, fair, credible and acceptable to all for the sake of the country, so the opposition should join the next polls in a bid to make it participatory and acceptable to all, he added.
The AL leader asked BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia that her party leaders are taking preparation to join the next general election. “Your (Khaleda) party leaders are staring at you for getting green light so that they can contest in the next polls,” he added.
Speaking at the same programme, Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said the 10th parliamentary elections would be held by January next year under an all-party election-time government headed by the incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Hanif alleged that the opposition was engaged in spreading falsehood over holding the elections. At the same time, he made it clear that the next general election would be held in due time. No one will be able to foil the polls
“We want to assure the people that the next polls will be held on time,” he added.
