Dhaka to seek duty-free market access to Bangkok
The Joint Trade Commission meeting between Bangladesh and Thailand begins today in Bangkok aimed at increasing Dhaka-Thai bilateral trade.
Officials in the commerce ministry said in the three-day JTC meeting, they would mainly focus on duty-free market access to Thailand and investment in Bangladesh.‘Various trade-related issues especially investment will get paramount importance during the JTC meeting,’ Ruhul Amin Sarkar, additional secretary (export), told the news agency on Sunday.
Commerce minister GM Quader will lead a delegation, which will meet high-ups of the Thai government to discuss how to double bilateral trade and investment by 2016.
Sarkar said the minister would invite Thai entrepreneurs to invest directly or in joint venture in infrastructure, health and tourism sectors in Bangladesh.
The two sides in the previous meeting agreed to reduce the existing trade imbalance between the two countries.
Bangladesh will request Thailand to import more Bangladeshi products including medicine, leather and leather goods, fish, jute and jute goods, ceramics and garments items to Thai market.
Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra visited Bangladesh in December 2012 and discussed with prime minister Sheikh Hasina the importance of enhancing connectivity between the two nations through increased cooperation.
