Teachers, students and staff of Jahangirnagar University on Monday formed a human chain on the campus, demanding immediate announcement of vice-chancellor panel election.
Shikkhak-Shikkharti-Karmakarta-Karmachari Oikyo Forum formed the human chain on the premises of JU administrative building. Earlier, following the chancellor’s [president of the republic] directive for holding VC panel election, the agitating teachers, students and employees called off their strike.
Addressing the human chain, the agitators claimed that soon after the chancellor’s order for holding VC panel election, VC Anwar Hossain is showing his reluctance again.
Agitating teachers’ body convener Professor Hanif Ali said, ‘VC should show due honour to the chancellors’ order and try to resolve the crisis. Delay in carrying out the chancellor’s directives would not be tolerated.’
On the other hand, the VC announced that he will soon meet the chancellor to get a clear idea on whether he had directed holding of an election to the Senate or a senate meeting to nominate three persons for the VC post’.
The vice-chancellor earlier said chancellor Abdul Hamid issued four directives through a fax dated November 6 to end the stalemate at Jahangirnagar University.
He said the directives include arranging the elections to JU’s bodies, including the senate, so that it could later nominate the three from whom the chancellor would appoint one as the VC.
Mentionable, the regular classes and examinations are operating smoothly as the teachers are back to classes calling off the ongoing strike after around six months.
