Former Chief Justice Habibur Rahman was laid to rest at city’s Banani graveyard following his second Namaz-e-Janaza at the Gulshan Azad mosque after Asar prayer yesterday.
Justice Habibur Rahman, also a former chief adviser to the caretaker government, died of brain haemorrhage on Saturday night after falling sick at his Gulshan residence. He was pronounced dead by doctors at the United Hospital, where he was taken at about 9 pm, family sources said. He was 85. Hundreds of people including finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith attended the second Namaz-e-Janaza before the burial of Justice Habibur Rahman.
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited the residence of Justice Muahmmad Habibur Rahman at Gulshan in the morning to see his body.
The Prime Minister stood beside the coffin of Justice Rahman in solemn silence for some time and offered Fateha.
She also inquired about wellbeing of the family members of the former Chief Justice and consoled them.
Hasina was accompanied by her sister Sheikh Rehana and Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad.
Later, the body of justice Rahman was brought to the Central Shaheed Minar at around 11:30am along with his three daughters Rubaba Rahman, Nusrat Habib and Rownak Shirin.
At the Shaheed Minar hundreds of people from all walks of life had been waiting since morning to show respect to a man they adored. A book of condolence was opened there for the mourners to pay their respect.
Representatives of different socio-cultural and political organisations arrived at the Shaheed Minar premises with wreaths and bouquets amid a pall of glooms.
Language veteran Rowshan Ara Bachhu placed the first wreaths on the fellow language veteran, who was followed by others.
After the first Namaz-e-Janaza, his body was taken to Azad Mosque, Gulshan where the second Janaza was held.
Meanwhile, the family has invited all to attend the Qulkhwani of Justice Habibur Rahman at the Gulshan Azad mosque after Asr prayer today.
