Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association on Saturday issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Anwar Hossain to resign as the vice-chancellor of the university or to face tough agitations.
The association leaders issued the ultimatum seeing Anwar at his office after a general meeting of the association held at Jahir Raihan auditorium seminar room.Anwar instantly told the association leaders that he would issue a statement on the issue.
The teachers association has been abstaining from classes since April 25 demanding his resignation on allegation of his failure to ensure proper academic atmosphere and security on the campus, irregularities and nepotism in administration and making biased statements.
The academic activists at the university remained at halt posing a threat of severe session jam as the teachers association on April 25 went for the work abstention alleging that the vice-chancellor had failed to punish Bangladesh Chhatra League activists for assaulting a teacher.
Earlier, the vice-chancellor had verbally suspended Chhtra League university unit secretary Razib Ahmed Rassel on charge of assaulting economics department teacher Nurul Haque on April 6.
No official order on the suspension of the studentship of Razib has yet been issued, while Razib has denied the allegation.
The vice-chancellor told New Age on Saturday that the probe report on the incident would be published soon and actions would be taken based on the report.
Asked about the teachers’ movement, Anwar said, ‘It is their democratic rights, but they should not disrupt the academic activities.’
