Kalabagan Krira Chakra kept their hopes of reaching Super Six phase of the Dhaka Premier League alive when they defeated neighbours Kalabagan Cricket Academy by 29 runs at Mirpur on Tuesday.
The match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium that was decided on the reserve day, Kalabagan dismissed the Academy side for a paltry 128 runs and reached 91-4 before rain interrupted once again.
Led by Mashrafee bin Murtaza, Kalabagan were declared winners according to Duckworth/Lewis Method as the play could not be resumed due to heavy downpour.
With the win, Kalabagan ended the first phase with 12 points from 11 matches, which still kept them alive the in league.
Their fate, however, will not be decided until two other matches of the final round were not completed.
In two of the final matches, Mohammedan Sporting Club will face Sheikh Jamal Dhanonndi Club today and Gazi Group will play against Victoria Sporting Club on Thursday.
Kalabagan can progress only if Gazi lose their match, which will give them an equal head-to-head result with three other contenders for the remaining two Super League slots.
They lost to Prime Bank and won against both
Mohammedan and
Sheikh Jamal means if Gazi lose, Kalabagan can progress by virtue of superior run rate.
All of these equations would not have come into account if Kalabagan could not beat Academy, who had their own reason to give their best as they were fighting to avoid relegation.
The Academy side went into the back foot on the first day, which they finished on 34-4 before rain intervened.
On resumption, they could do nothing better as the side lost a wicket just on the second ball to be reduced to 35-5.

Abadur Razzak claimed highest 3-28 runs while Mashrafee and Shahbaz Chouhan chipped in with two wickets each.
Kalabagan in reply lost opener Jashimuddin for a duck but Hasanuzzaman, who rose to the prominence with a 53-ball 95 in the previous match, played yet another spectacular innings.
Playing with the prospect of rain, the pocket-sized right-handed batsman struck 47 off 57 balls with three fours and as many sixes that kept Kalabagan always ahead.
