Today is the 14th anniversary of the death of Independence Award-winning cultural activist-Tagore exponent Kalim Sharafi.
Born on May 8, 1924 in Birbhum of West Bengal, British India to Syed Sami Ahmed and Begum Aliya, Kalim Sharafi developed a passion for music at an early age.
He recorded 18 albums, 15 cassettes and three CDs. In his multifaceted career, he also directed films and worked for television.
He worked assiduously to set alight cultural practices among the masses. The founding president of Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Shilpi Sangstha, Kalim Sharafi also established a music school named Sangeet Bhaban in 1983.
Kalim Sharafi had received many awards for his contribution to the country’s music, including Ekushey Padak, and Independence Award.
Kalim Sharafi passed away on November 2, 2010. He was laid to rest at the Martyred Intellectual’s Graveyard in Dhaka.
