In an instant reaction to BNP chairperson’s proposal on the poll-time government, eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain on Monday said that it is a good proposal and may help resolve the current political impasse.
He said, Khaleda Zia’s proposal can be implemented if all political parties could come to an understanding in the greater national interest. Asked whether the proposal fits into the constitution, he said if both the government and the opposition reach a consensus on the proposal, the issue of sticking to the constitution can be overcome. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday offered an alternative formula to form a polls-time government led by a revered person comprising 10 ex-advisers from the 1996 and 2001 caretaker governments to be chosen by the ruling and opposition parties to hold an inclusive and credible election. “The whole nation wants a credible, fair and impartial election under a non-partisan government. The election should be acceptable to all. If all parties come to a consensus on BNP chairperson’s proposal, it would be possible to hold a credible election avoiding confrontation,” Barrister Kamal Hossain told The Independent over phone from abroad.
The parliamentary elections in 1996 and 2001 held under the caretaker governments were accepted both locally and internationally, because they were free and fair, he further said.
