The staff of Khulna City Corporation on Thursday observed a two-hour work abstention from 12:00pm, protesting at attack on the city mayor, Md Moniruzzaman Moni, and withdrawal of cases against him. Most of the officials and workers of the city corporation, during the work abstention, observed the programme by closing doors of their chambers. The KCC Shramik-Karmachari Oikya Parishad, during the work abstention hours, met in a rally at the Nagar Bhaban compound, the office complex of the city corporation, to press home the demands.
The corporation’s panel mayors, councillors and councillors for reserved seats joined the rally.
Speakers at the programme warned that if the attackers on the KCC mayor were not arrested before December 1, they would declare tough agitation programme through a press conference on December 2.
Presided over by the Parishad president Uzzwal Kumar Saha, the rally was also addressed by KCC panel mayor-1 Md Anisur Rahman Biswas, panel mayor -2 Sheikh Hafizur Rahman Hafiz and officials SKM Tasaduzzaman and MM Majed, among others.
KCC mayor Moni, also the Khulna city BNP general secretary, received injuries when police allegedly attacked a rally of BNP-led alliance in the city on Tuesday, the first day of the 71-hour countrywide nonstop railway, roadway and waterway blockade enforced by the opposition alliance.
On Wednesday, police lodged a case against about 250 opposition leaders and activists including Moni in connection with vandalism during the first day’s blockade programme.
