Leader of the opposition in Parliament and Chairperson of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Begum Khaleda Zia is scheduled to address a public meeting at Sylhet Alia Madrasha Ground on Saturday afternoon. The former premier left Dhaka for Sylhet at 5:30pm on Friday from her Gulshan residence. After reaching Sylhet city; she would be staying at the Sylhet Circuit House.
The public meeting is scheduled to start at 3:00pm, with President of Sylhet City unit BNP MA Haque in the chair.
On her way to Sylhet, party supporters and people from different walks of life greeted her from both sides of the roads by waving their hands.
Khaleda Zia takes the tour as part of the BNP-led 18-party programme to drum up public support in favour of the opposition’s demand to restore the non-party caretaker government to oversee the next general elections.
Organisers said they have already completed preparatory works to make Khaleda’s public meeting in Sylhet a success.
Talking to The Independent, MA Haque expects that about eight lakh people from Sylhet and its adjacent districts would take part in the public meeting.
Several hundreds arches were erected on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway to welcome the opposition leader to Sylhet.
Huge number of posters and festoons were also placed in different places on the way wishing the success of Khaleda’s visit.
