Leaders of the ruling alliance have dismissed the recent proposal made by the opposition on the poll-time government, fuelling apprehensions that the current political imbroglio will linger for some more time yet. State minister for law Advocate Quamrul Islam has dismissed the proposal of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia to form the poll-time government with former advisers to the caretaker governments of 1996 and 2001, saying it went beyond the ambit of the Constitution.
“There’s no scope for discussing the proposal on the poll-time government. There will be no discussion beyond the Constitution. Discussion will be held as per the charter,” he said.
Quamrul Islam made these remarks at an emergency meeting of the City Awami League central working committee at Bangabandhu Avenue here on Tuesday.
He further said leaders of the city unit of the Awami League would resist the BNP if the leaders and workers of the Opposition party engage in acts of violence and anarchy.
“Khaleda Zia has shown her attitude in accordance with the proposal of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). We are respectful of the law. We have given directions to our leaders and workers as per the law. But if anybody resorts to violence, we will resist it,” the AL leader warned.
Meanwhile, industries minister Dilip Barua said Khaleda Zia’s proposal of an election-time government is not possible in the current administrative reality; rather, it is like a disguised knife.
“Khaleda Zia is trying to push the political arena into a whirlwind through such a proposal. The current political crisis will worsen, for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s proposal to form an all-party election-time government has been underestimated,” he said at a press briefing on the current political situation at a city hotel.
