With the fixing of June 15 for holding Khulna City Corporation polls, election campaign has started
in the industrial city in full swing.
The ruling Awami League and its allies are backing incumbent mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque, city AL president, while the opposition BNP and its allies are still undecided over the issue.Five mayoral candidates both from opposition and ruling party alliances have collected nomination forms till May 10.
However, two BNP leaders who have collected nomination forms have already started election campaign.
They are Moniruzzaman Mony, city BNP general secretary and Shafiqul Alam Mona, district BNP general secretary.
Shafiqul Islam Modhu, district Jatiya Party (Ershad) president and Sheikh Sirajul Islam, former KCC mayor and also the city Muslim League president also collected nomination forms.
The regional office of the Election Commission started distributing forms from May 5 and it will continue till May 11.
The last date of filling nomination forms is May 12 and the withdrawal dates are May 15-16. The EC office will publish the final list of contestants on May 26.
Meanwhile, 237 councilor candidates against the 31 KCC wards and 48 women candidates against 10 reserved seats have also collected the nomination forms while seven councilor candidates submitted the nomination forms.
