The life of Saifur Rahman, a college student, was cut short by a killer bus at Abdul Ghani Road in the city on Friday afternoon.
Saifur, 19, was returning home after attending his classes at Dhaka Imperial College when the accident took place at about 1:00pm. He died on the spot.
Pedestrians who witnessed the incident found the phone number of Dhaka Imperial College in Saifur’s identity card and called the principal to inform him about the tragedy, said Emdadul Haque, a teacher at the college.
‘Email is the very important nowadays’, were among the words the first year student of business studies had written in his notebook that was found with him after the accident.
Saifur, the youngest of seven siblings and a resident of Merajnagar under Kadamtali police station in the capital, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after a Belal Paribahan bus ran him over, but doctors declared him dead.
The body was sent to his village home at Majhirdalikanda in Shariatpur district for burial.
Saifur’s father Akkel Ali Sheikh, a farmer, who came to Dhaka after hearing the news, said his son had asked him a few days ago to buy him trousers, ‘but I could not do so.’
Dhaka Imperial College principal, Mahfuzul Haque, told New Age that Saifur had left the college for home after the classes were suspended at about 11:45am for the day.
‘Saifur was a very hard working student and was trying to get admitted to Dhaka University,’ he added.
The police seized the bus but the driver fled, police said.
DMCH reported 16 other road accidents till 6:00pm Saturday.
