Kitchen markets absorb initial Ramadan heat

Prices of green chilli, aubergine drop after jump
The prices of most of the vegetables including green chilli and aubergine decreased in the week ending Friday but still remained high in the capital’s kitchen markets.
Green chilli price decreased by Tk 80 a kilogram and was selling at Tk 120-Tk 140 a kg on Friday since the beginning of Ramadan. The item also retailed at Tk 80-Tk 120 a kg in some parts of the city.
The price of aubergine decreased by Tk 40 a kg and was selling at Tk 40-Tk 60 a kg in the city’s retail markets.
On the eve of Ramadan, the fasting month for Muslims, the prices of green chilli and aubergine had gone up sharply.
The price of green chilli, however, started to drop after the government and businesses had decided to increase the import of green chilli to keep the price of the item affordable for consumers.
The price of green chilli witnessed a fresh decline on Friday as the National Board of Revenue on Thursday cut duties on import of green chilli to 25 per cent from 92.30 per cent.
The prices of papaya, okra, and bitter gourd decreased  by Tk 5–Tk 10 a kg and papaya was retailing at Tk 25 a kg, okra at Tk 30 a kg and bitter gourd at Tk 40–Tk 50 a kg on Friday.
Tomato price decreased by Tk 30 a kg and it was selling at Tk 100 a kg.
The prices of beef and broiler remained unchanged. Beef was selling at Tk 290–Tk 300 a kg and broiler at Tk 165–Tk 170 a kg. Mutton was selling at Tk 425–Tk 450 a kg.
The prices of fish remained high in the week.
Rohita was selling at Tk 250–Tk 320 a kg, katla at Tk 220–Tk 300 a kg, pangas at Tk 180–Tk 300 a kg and tilapia at Tk 180–Tk 210 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
Onion price remained high at Tk 50 a kg, while the imported onion was retailing at Tk 45 a kg on Friday.
The local ginger was retailing at Tk 180 a kg, while the imported item was selling at Tk 90 a kg.
The price of edible oil witnessed a downward trend in the city’s kitchen markets.
Unpacked soya bean was retailing at Tk 120 a kg and super palm oil at Tk 80 a kg over the week ending Friday.
The price of bottled soya bean oil (five litres) was selling at Tk 635–Tk 655 on Friday.
Red lentil, imported from Turkey and Canada, was selling at Tk 75–Tk 85 a kg over the week.
The price of fine variety of red lentil called ‘kangaroo’ was selling at Tk 130 a kg on Friday while the local variety of red lentil was selling at Tk 115 a kg.
The imported garlic price remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 70 a kg while the local garlic was retailing at Tk 90 a kg on the day.
The price of potato remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 18–Tk 20 a kg on the day.
Sugar price remained unchanged and the commodity was selling at Tk 46–Tk 48 a kg on Friday.
Chickpea price decreased by Tk 5 a kg and the commodity was selling at Tk 60–Tk 65 a kg.
The dates were retailing at the ranges between Tk 140 and Tk 550 a kg.
The prices of gur and puffed and flaked rice remained unchanged.
Gur was selling at between Tk 100 and Tk 150 kg, puffed rice for prices between Tk 60 and Tk 75 a kg and flaked rice for
prices between Tk 60 and Tk 80 a kg.
Fine varieties of miniket and najirshail rice were selling at between Tk 42 and Tk 52 a kg, medium varieties at between Tk 36 and Tk 48 a kg and coarse varieties at between Tk 32 and Tk 34 a kg.
