With serenity in her voice, singer Krishnokoli has won the hearts of millions of music lovers in the country from the very point of releasing her first solo album.
The album, ‘Surje Badhi Basha’ was released on Pahela Baishakh 2007 and since then regardless of age—young, middle-aged, old—everybody praise the uniqueness of Krishnokoli. Her popularity was boosted up as soon as she emerged as a playback singer by singing for movie Monpura.
Recently New Age caught up with the singer to have a conversation about her experiences, current activities, future planning and others.
Krishnokoli is passing busy days in studio for her upcoming album featuring Santali and Jhumur songs. Krishnokoli said, ‘The album will be an experimental one to uphold a part of our ethnic culture through the songs. Music will be re-arranged but the original tune and lyrics will be untouched.’ The album is expected to be released in October.
‘It was a challenge for me since I do not consider myself such a talented singer to sing songs of these genres but I tried my best to convey the originality of the songs to the listeners’ added the humble singer.
Krishnokoli has recently received National Film Award for her performance in Monpura. Talking about the issue, she says, ‘I am glad yet tensed since the recognition creates a pressure to produce more good works.’
While asked about her ventures as a playback singer, she said, ‘The present condition of the songs of Bangla cinema is very frustrating. The songs seldom provide insightful lyrics and the opportunity to prove the excellence of a singer. Nevertheless, if I get any good offer like Monpura, I would love to work again as a playback singer.’
Born and raised in Khulna, Krishnokoli is immensedly influenced by her mother.
According to Krishnokoli she was not only her mother but also was her teacher, philosopher, friend and her ideal. ‘I learned from my mother how to fight for right, justice and humanity. She has fostered me and my brother with great values and morality,’ said Krishnokoli.
Thus, current monotonous situations of cultural arena disappoint Krishnokoli. Culture is not only about music but it also includes our heritage and root which are now threatened to be extinct for the conspiracy of power full multinational companies and their acquaintances.
‘We have an organization named Sanskriti er Mancho which works to revive the practice of our culture because we believe economics, politics and culture are inter-related with each other and together make the structure of any nation,’ said Krishnokoli. ‘And assaulting the culture can even destroy a nation which is now happening to our country,’ concluded the conscious the artiste.
