The protesting civil engineering department students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology broke their fast-unto-death Thursday night as the university vice-chancellor, Professor Md Alamgir, assured them of resuming their classes on November 11.
Over a hundred students of the department resumed their hunger strike on the campus on Monday, demanding immediate resumption of classes which have remained suspended for last six months.
Md Imran Hossain, a fourth year student of the department, said they withdrew their programme after the vice-chancellor informed that their class would resume on November 11 after the teachers agreed to stop their work stoppage.
At least seven students fell sick on Thursday after starting the fast-unto-death programme and the protesting students urged the president, Abdul Hamid, also KUET chancellor, to intervene to resolve the crisis.
They made the urge at a press conference at Khulna Press Club Thursday noon.
Later they withdrew their programme in the night as the VC assured them of fulfilling their demand and resuming the classes from November 11.
The VC said that teachers in an academic council meeting on the day decided to withdraw their work stoppage.
The sick students were undergoing treatment at the university medical centre, he added.
