Lakhs of people marooned : Floods spread downstream

Water in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Ganges are in falling trend while the Padma and the Meghna follows a rising trend thus further deteriorating the flood situation of the country, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC).
The flood situation in low-lying areas of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Sherpur, Jamalpur, Serajganj, Rajbari, Faridpur, Shariatpur, Madaripur, Munshiganj, Manikganj districts are likely to improve by next 24 hours though flood situation in Sylhet and Moulvi Bazar districts are likely to deteriorate over the same time.
According to the FFWC, of the 73 water monitoring stations 34 recorded a rising trend whereas 29 stations recorded downward trend. 11 stations reported as water flowing above the danger level, it said.
The Brahmaputra river was flowing above 21cm at Chilmari point yesterday while the Jamuna 29cm at Bahadurabad, 47cm at Sirajganj and 18cm at Aricha points, the Padma 62cm at Goalunda and 70cm at Bhagyakul, the Ariyal Khan 23cm at Madaripur, the Kushiyara 62cm at Amalshid, 46cm at Sheola and 12cm at Sherpur and the Surma 45cm at Kanaighat.
The water level in the Kushiyara and the Surma River has increased dramatically till yesterday. The water level of Kushiyara at Amalshid point was 23cm, Sheola 20cm and Sherpur 10cm respectively on Wednesday. FFWC recorded 62cm, 46cm and 12cm respectively at the same points yesterday. On the other hand, water level of the Surma River at Kanaighat point has increased 11cm yesterday than the previous record.
The flood situation in Chilmari has improved slightly whereas in Aricha and Madaripur remain unchanged. Bahadurabad, Goalundo and Bhagyakul however showed somewhat deterioration.
In Khulna, most low-lying areas of four upazilas in the district were inundated as water level of the major rivers of the district rose due to heavy rainfall and a number of ring embankments collapsed, Water
Development Board sources said.
Over one lakh people of fifty villages at the banks of the rivers have been marooned while standing crops on vast tract of land damaged, locals said. The flood victims of the affected areas have taken shelter in the cyclone shelters, schools, embankments,road and other high places.
In Shariatpur, thousands of people of the district are suffering a lot as flood water damaged their houses and standing crops.
Local administration and union parishad sources said over hundreds of houses under Naria, Jajira, Bhedarganj and Gosairhat upazilas eroded in the river during the last 24 hours.
Most of the areas of Dewanganj, Islampur and Melandaha upazilas and some parts of Bakshiganj, Madarganj, Sarishabari and sadar upazila have been flooded, deserting around 5 lakh people.
Our correspondents informed that standing crops on some 22,715 hectares of land went under water.
However, sources said that District administration has allocated 120 mts rice and cash Tk 2.30 lakh for the flood victims in the last two days.
Chitalmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Enamul Haq said around 8000 families have been affected due to flood and river erosion in six unions. Besides, crops on 2000 hectares of land have been damaged, he said.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Department sources said although 250 mts rice and cash Tk 10 lakh have been allocated from the government, the victims are yet to get the relief.
The Water Resource Minister Ramesh Chandra Shen however said that though sudden flood appears in different district, there is no possibility of devastating flood. The water level in different rivers is likely to downfall by next 24 or 48 hours, he said.
