Renowned Tagore singer Lily Islam had a very busy day on Wednesday, which happened to be Rabindranath Tagore’s 152th birth anniversary.
The artiste sang at different places on the occasion including the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy
and on a number of television channels.
Lily Islam is currently working on her 16th Tagore album. ‘Tagore wrote many songs on the six seasons. I will record 10 such songs for my album Sharo Ritur Gaan’, she said.
So far, her primary selection of songs includes Nai roshonai darun dahon bela for summer, Nibir megher chhayay mon diyechhi mele and Pagla haowar badol dine for monsoon, Sharate aj kon otithi elo praner dare and Aji dhaner khete for autumn and Basonte aj dhorar chitte for spring.
Lily Islam, an alumnus of Shantiniketan, emerged as a Tagore singer in 1990 with her first album Ananda dhani jagao. She has already released 15 albums all of which exclusively contain Tagore’s songs.
Lily Islam informed that when rendering Tagore songs, she always follows the style she has learnt as a student at Shantiniketan. She further believes that the classic style of Tagore songs will survive and all the experimentations in the name of fusion will not last long.
Terming this trend as ‘one-time use’ music, she said, ‘Music lovers may like to hear this type of fusion once, but they are unlikely to turn to this repeatedly. I have noticed that they repeatedly listen to the original compositions.’
She further added that Tagore himself has done the required fusion and there isn’t much room to experiment. ‘He had comprehensive knowledge of music from around the world. I do not find it necessary or fruitful to do further fusion with Tagore’s songs. Anymore experimentation would probably tarnish the beauty of the songs,’ she professed.
