The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court Monday directed the RAJUK authorities to maintain status quo on the construction work of Purbachal housing project at Barokau and Parabarthha moujas in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur. The apex court also ordered the High Court to dispose of a rule pending before it in this regard within three months. In response to a petition filed by Bangladesh Environment Lawyers Association (BELA), a five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain passed the order.
Advocate Iqbal Kabir Liton, one of the counsels for BELA, told reporters that the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha could not carry out its construction work of the project following the SC order.
Deputy Attorney General Motaher Hossain Saju, also one of counsels for RAJUK, told The Independent that the RAJUK had already filled up around 80 percent of the two areas for the construction of the project and the present situation would prevail at the project in the meantime before the disposal of the pending rule by the HC.
