The Guinness World Record for the most ghost peppers consumed in a minute was recently broken by a Californian man.
Gregory Foster received a prize from Guinness World Records on Monday for consuming 17 ghost peppers, commonly known as bhut jolokia in a single minute.
Foster broke the record on November 14, 2021, in San Diego, California, according to a press release by Guinness. Foster ate 3.98 ounces of ghost peppers in total.
According to the press release, jalapeno peppers report between 2,500 to 8,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), while ghost peppers can score 1 million or more SHU.
“This record attempt is a personal challenge to see how far I can push myself and my passion of the ultra spicy peppers,” Foster said in a statement.
As a chilli enthusiast, he said, “As a chilli lover, I’ve been trying to advance the awareness and the excitement surrounding the super-hot [chilies] out there.”
Foster already has two world records: the most Carolina Reaper chillies consumed in one minute (2017) and the quickest time to consume three (2017).
