A fire at a kitchen market in Old Dhaka left one person burnt to death early on Sunday. Some dairy cattle were also roasted alive in the blaze, police said. Jamir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Bangshal Police Station told The New Nation that the fire broke out at Naya Bazar DIT market during the early hours yesterday when the man, identified as Din Islam, was asleep inside his grocery shop. Witnesses said as Din Islam was asleep he could not come out of the grocery shop timely. Later, his charred body was recovered by local people. A number of cattle kept for slaughtering in the market were also burnt, the OC said, adding over 40 shops were gutted. On information, 12 fire fighting units from Fulbaria, Azimpur, Palashi and Sadarghat rushed in and doused the blaze at about 5:30 am. Two fire fighters, injured while dousing the flames, were rushed to Mitford Hospital. Another fire fighter, who fell sick by inhaling smoke during the operations, was also hospitalized. Fire Brigade sources said the fire originated from a welding factory in the market and soon engulfed adjoining shops at about 4 am. The extent of loss from the fire could go up to Tk one crore, said the Fire Brigade sources.
