Emdadul Haque, a government employee who, during his tenure, had traveled several times without tickets on different trains on the Dhaka-Chattogram and Dhaka-Sylhet railways recently paid for all his tickets after retiring.
Emdadul Haque (61) from South Mourail area of Brahmanbaria town came to the booking assistant room at Brahmanbaria train station at around 12:30 pm yesterday (September 5, 2022) and paid all previous fares for traveling by train without a ticket
Father-of-three Emdadul retired from his position as a constable at the Anti-Corruption Commission in December of last year.
Emdadul would sometimes board various trains without tickets during his service as he could not manage tickets, but he kept track of all the costs of ticketless train travel. According to these records, he paid the railroad toll.
“There is no other way to repay this debt. So I deposited the money directly into the railway. I don’t know if I will be free from the liability, but I will get peace of mind.”
Emdadul Haque said that on several occasions during his service he traveled without a ticket on different trains on the Dhaka-Chattogram and Dhaka-Sylhet routes. But now he’s suffering from guilt after his retirement.
He said the fares were paid after contacting the railway authority.
The story quickly gained popularity on social media after Sohel Rana Bhuiyan, the admin of the Facebook group The Train, posted a status about the event.
Booking assistant Didar Mollah of Brahmanbaria train station said Emdadul traveled without a ticket several times during his time as a service agent. But he’s suffered from regrets since his retirement.
That’s why he turned to the railway himself. To get rid of the debt he paid his dues today by buying a ticket worth Tk 2,530.
Rafiqul Islam, the station master of the Brahmanbaria Railway, said that Emdadul set such a high standard of honesty that the railway authorities were overjoyed.
