Ganajagaran Mancha leaders on Thursday expressed happiness over the capital punishment meted out to Jamaat leader Mohammad Kamaruzzaman for his involvement in crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War. Hundreds of people, including Mancha leaders, cheered as the International Crimes Tribunal-2 delivered the verdict in a packed courtroom at 2 pm on Thursday. Holding national flags, they chanted “fashi, fashi” (hang, hang). They also flashed the victory sign to different media outlets present at the Shahbagh Projonmo Chattar.
Hundreds of people from all walks of life, including protesters of the Ganajagaran Mancha, brought out a procession, led by Imran H Sarkar, from the Shahbagh Projonmo Chattar to the Central Shaheed Minar at around 2:15 pm.
Sarkar said the verdict reflected the aspirations of the countrymen. “This victory is for everyone. We’ve waited 42 years for this verdict. We’re happy now,” he added.
He also said that their movement would continue until the completion of trial against all war criminals.
People started thronging the Shahbagh intersection from Wednesday after the tribunal said it would deliver the verdict on Thursday.
